We will be completing 2 assignments where we will learn about and experiment with slow shutter speeds. One is Blur Portraits, the other is Light painting.
Blur Portraits - Slow Shutter Speed
As photographers, we usually use two different techniques to capture our images: The first is freezing the moment and capturing the split second we are witnessing. The other option is using a long exposure, to show movement, changes, or show things we don't normally see with our eyes. But what if you combined these two concepts - freezing a moment while adding movement? Partner up and take 5 photos in the Photo Studio. The camera will be set on a slow shutter speed and remain open for a few seconds. Move your face, hands, body to create motion during that time while the shutter remains open.
Once the images are downloaded, you can access them and do your six point editing on 2 of these. Now make any creative editing (adjust colors, B&W, apply PS Actions, Adjustment Layers, etc.) adjustments to these 2 photos.
Save them to the correct folder on the V: drive > Advanced Photography > Your Last Name_Blur Photo 1, and Your Last Name_Blur Photo 2
STUDENT EXAMPLES
LIGHT PAINTING •Light painting, light drawing, or light art performance photography is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source while taking a long exposure photograph, either to illuminate a subject or to shine a point of light directly at the camera, or by moving the camera itself during exposure.
•Light painting has long inspired photographers by capturing a moving light source while taking a long exposure photograph which is difficult to perfect but can produce exciting results. The camera’s shutter will open for extended periods of time, often well over a minute, trails of light can be drawn with LEDs, flashlights, or even sparklers.
You will be completing 2 light painting assignments.
One assignment will be a light paint portraits.
The other is a light painting object.
Explore different ways you can use light to draw/highlight a person or object. Consider the use of line and light within the image but also think about the expression and pose of the person along with how interesting the object is.
You will need to turn in a contact sheet with 5 portraits and 5 object photos.
FINAL EDITS Next, Edit your 5 best light painting photos. At least 2 need to be portraits and 2 need to be objects, the 5th one can be your choice. The images should be put into a google slide presentation with before and after photos. Share it with me when you are finished.
PROJECT Create a composition where you layer together at least 3 of your light painting images in order to create an entirely new image. You may use any of your light painting images to do this. Save it to the folder on the V:/ drive when you are finished.
